With the growing popularity and commercial growth of cannabis in the United States, weed use and acceptance continues to get more widespread. Whether for medical or recreational use, cannabis has a significant impact on both the economy and culture. How much do you know about cannabis? Read our weed trivia below and find out some fun cannabis facts.
1. Half of Americans have tried cannabis. While we may be tempted to think cannabis has always been a popular drug — especially after the 60s — surveys point to a recent steady rise in the number of Americans trying weed. From 2013 to 2023, the number rose from 38% of Americans to 50%. This doesn’t mean they’re daily users but rather that they’ve at least tried it once.
2. Pre-rolls and vape pens are here to stay. The industry is seeing a sudden boom in popularity in pre-rolls. They’ve become the third-largest product category in the market. While that trend is strong for millennial and Gen Z women in Canada, young people still generally prefer vape pens, with 1-gram cartridges making up 70.8% of vapor pen sales.
3. It has 25+ nicknames. While you may have heard cannabis called “weed” or “marijuana,” you may be unfamiliar with its other names. Here’s a list of some you may be unfamiliar with:
- Aunt Mary
- BC Bud, Blunts
- Boom, Chronic
- Dope, Gangster
- Ganja
- Grass
- Hash
- Herb
- Hydro
- Indo
- Joint
- Kif
- Mary Jane
- Mota
- Pot
- Reefer
- Sinsemilla
- Skunk
- Smoke
- Yerba
Of course, many of these are outdated or used only in certain communities, so we recommend using “weed” or “cannabis” to be well-understood when you make an order at your local dispensary.
4. You can’t overdose on cannabis. The statistical probability of dying from cannabis consumption is zero. According to the DEA, there have been 0 marijuana-related overdoses ever reported. This, of course, doesn’t cover anyone operating heavy machinery or performing dangerous activities while under the influence. So, next time you think you’re dying, cannabis statistics say you’re probably just greening out.
5. There is a vast racial disparity between cannabis “criminals” and cannabis business owners. Studies have shown that Black Americans are almost four times more likely to be arrested for violating marijuana possession laws than white Americans, even though the consumption rate for both populations is nearly equal. Meanwhile, less than 0.2% of cannabis stores nationwide are majority Black-owned.
6. Many women consume cannabis, but most do so privately. 37% of American women aged 21+ use weed mainly for therapeutic reasons, but most are keeping it a secret from coworkers, friends, and family.
